Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Before placing an implant or denture, Dr. Pasternak may need to carry out a certain surgical preparation. The process of preparing your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis is thus referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.

It is common for patients to need a minor oral surgical procedure before placing a partial or complete denture to ensure accurate and comfortable results. Since a denture sits on the bone ridge, it's important that the bone is the proper shape and size.

If you have a tooth extracted, the underlying bone may turn out to be sharp and uneven. For the denture to fit correctly, we may need to smooth or reshape the bone. In other cases, we need to remove excess bone prior to insertion.

To prepare your mouth for a denture, Dr. Pasternak may need to perform one or more of the following procedures:

  • Removal of excess bone

  • Smoothing or reshaping of the bone

  • Reduction of the bone ridge

  • Removal of excess gum tissue

  • Exposing impacted teeth

The type of pre-prosthetic surgery a patient may need depends on bone shape, gum tissue, and other conditions. Our team will discuss your particular needs with you during your appointment.
